That was to change in the early ’90’s with the release of Prime Directive: the Star Fleet Universe RPG. In short, SFB seemed an unlikely candidate for a RPG about exploration and scientific endeavor.
THE PRIME DIRECTIVE RPG AMARRILLO SERIES
All good stuff for a wargame set in space and while loosely based on the original TV series it was largely independent of Paramount’s official Star Trek timeline making it a hard sell on purists. While initially overshadowed by FASA’s licensed productions and mostly just an excuse for starships to blow up each other into small stellar debris, SFB had developed into it’s own parallel universe.

All this combined with the rate that the ST:TNG series was developing quickly outpaced the speed in how FASA could keep up with it all as well as the changing nature of Star Trek lore would see FASA publishing just two supplements for ST:TNG before Paramount would pull the license and soon after the first and most prolific of the Star Trek roleplaying games ended up as a dead edition.ĭuring this time a derivative setting called Star Fleet Battles had been quietly developing. Soon after ST:TNG’s debut Paramount began to exert greater control over the Star Trek franchise, concerning itself primarilly with the canonization of what was and what was not official Star Trek material as well as becoming uncomfortable with what they perceived as an excessive level of violence presented in the FASA’s version of the Star Trek RPG. Overall it was a fine time to boldly go where no one had gone before in the Star Trek universe.Īs fine of a job as FASA did with the stewardship of Star Trek as a RPG the arrival of Star Trek: the Next Generation TV series would bring about many changes to the Star Trek universe and it’s fandom.

FASA did well to support this philosophy, releasing numerous supplements, rules and adventures that expanded the scope of play into the timelines of the movies and even outside the confines of the Federation, eventually allowing players to take on the roles of Klingons or even play as free traders and mercenaries.

FASA set game shortly after the TV series ended but well before the Star Trek movies, making this a good choice as it could focus on periods outside of current development while allowing for expansion into other areas of the Star Trek universe down the road.

It also featured a starship simulator that allowed everyone at the table to participate during starship combat by making it a group effort and doing more besides just moving the ship around and rolling to hit and dealing out damage. Character generation was fairly involved but placed a strong emphasis on playing the crew of the USS Enterprise so that play could start right away. It was a fairly straight forward game system, using a percentile dice based resolution system that made it easy to understand and play. Eventually, in the early 80’s FASA acquired the license from Paramount to produce a Star Trek RPG. After all it seemed a natural fit for the gaming culture at the time as Star Trek enjoyed just as much or more popularity as Lord of the Rings did. But, what does this have to do with gaming? Why, I’m glad you asked! Star Trek was based on the premise of a roaming starship having all kinds of adventures each week and centered around a recurring cast of characters that it seemed like a no brainer for translating into a fun roleplaying game right? Well you may be surprised.Īfter D&D and Traveller hit the market people began to wonder when a RPG about Star Trek would appear. It was a time of alien cultures that dressed in silver suits, wore obtrusive make up or were a culture of humans trapped in a period of time from 20th century earth.

Forget the preachiness of the Next Generation and kick that whiskey voiced battle axe Captain Janeway to the curb! This was a universe of short skirts, green skinned babes and punches in the face as openers in diplomatic negotiations. McCoy’s colloquiums and disposable red shirted crewmen. Forget baldy and pensive Captain Picard this was the hour of Captain Kirk, Mr. I would stay up late and watch with a mixture of trepidation, incredulity and wide eyed fascination at the voyages of the USS Enterprise and it’s crew. Back in the days of yore Star Trek was broadcast after the 11 o’clock news on Sundays in my hometown. I’m going to show a bit of my grognardism in this post so beware.
