When he was finished, the gun was sent out and silver plated, and then returned to him. When the war ended, no plans were made to revive the Single Action Army revolver as the design was seen as obsolete. He states that the engraving is done in the traditional Belgian style with a chasing hammer and chisel (called by some graveur). At the beginning of World War II, Colt ceased production of the Single Action Army revolver to devote more time to filling orders for the war. He further explains that the gun was polished in August of 1997 and then sent back to him for engraving. Also there is a typed letter dated Novemfrom Bob Barlow, the engraver, who states that he bought the gun in June of 1997 with the intent of engraving and reselling it.

The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, caliber, barrel length, blue finish with the grips "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 to Hugh Whitaker, of Paris, Texas on September 13, 1957. Fixed sights with smooth two piece grips with silver Colt medallions. Production resumed in 1956, and these guns are known as Second generation Single Action Army revolvers, which are quickly identified by a SA suffix at the end of their s/n, and continued through 1975.

The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and on the left side of the front and back straps under the grips. The First Generation Colt Single Action Army revolvers were produced between their introduction in 1873 and WWII. 45" on the left side and the two line, three patent dates are on the left side of the frame followed by the Rampant Colt. The top of the barrel has the one line address, "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY. The revolver has been finished in silver with a gold hammer, trigger and ejector head. Production was reinstated in 1956, the beginning of the '2nd Generation' of SAAs. Various Colt SAA models were built from 1873 to 1940. Manufactured in 1957 and subsequently engraved and silver finished. government procured over 37,000 Colt SAAs over the next 19 years.
